Beata

Kun Orlando palasi kotiin pitkältä merimatkaltaan, häntä odotti kotona yllätys. Vanha vuokraemäntä Beata oli joutunut sairaalaan ja pyytänyt Miriamia huolehtimaan poissaollessaan taloudestaan. Ja vaikka Miriam oli hyvin huolissaan emännän tilasta, nautti hän toisaalta suuresti lukaalinsa laajentumisesta kolmeen kerrokseen!

When Orlando got back from the seas there was a surprise waiting for him at home. Their landlady of high age called Beata had fallen sick and had to go to hospital. She had asked Miriam to take care of the house while she is away. And although Miriam was very worried about the landlady's condition she was also much enjoying living in three floors instead of their small room in the attic. 

Tuliaisiksi Kaakkois-Aasian reissultaan Orlando toi eksoottisia huonekasveja ja karvaisen kaverin, löytökoiran, joka oli lyöttäytynyt Orlandon seuraan Sri Lankan satamassa. Hauska pötkylä sai nimekseen Santino, joka on italiaa ja tarkoittaa pientä pyhimystä.

As a souvenir from Southeastern Asia Orlando brought exotic plants and one furry friend, a homeless dog that had started to follow Orlando in one of the harbors of Sri Lanka. The funny sausage has been named Santino which is Italian and means 'a little saint'.

Aarteita ja remonttia / Some treasures and some renovation

Pitää niin kiirettä 1:1-elämässä, että kaikki hommat junnaa Huis Orlandossa paikoillaan jo kolmatta viikkoa... Alakertaan on tulossa väliseinä keittiön ja eteisen välille, ja laitan seinän ehkä myös ylimpään kerrokseen. Ei etene, kun ei ole tapetteja...

I'm so busy with my 1:1 life that all the work with Huis Orlando is at a stand still... I'm building a wall to the ground floor between the kitchen and the hall and I'm also planning a wall to the attic. But since I have had no time to look for the wallpapers...

Ostin Heli Snickerin taitavasti rakentaman puusohvan - miten ihana se onkaan! Kulutin vähän kulmia ja lisäsin Nukkekotimarkkinoilta ostamani tyynyt. Daalia on Nukkekotikirppikseltä ja kaunis ruukku Taru Astikaiselta messuilta. Kiinalaisessa kaapissa näkyy uusimpia aarteitani: minikeramiikkaa Nukkekotikirppiskeltä. Pikkupöydällä olevat kukat kuuluvat myös suosikkeihini, ja MiniMirkan pikkuastia on täydellisesti samaa sävyä sohvan kanssa..!

I bought this wooden bench made by Heli Snickeri from the Dollhouse flea market in FB - and I love it! I showed it some sand paper to add a bit worn out look and added the pillows I bought from Doll House Fare in Turku. Flower is from FB flea market and the beautiful pot is from Taru Astikainen at the fair. You can see my newest treasures in the Chinese cabinet: miniature ceramics from FB flea market. Flowers on the small table are my favourites too and the little dish by MiniMirka is just the right hue of green to go along with the bench..!

Eräänä aamuna Orlando huomasi lehdessä työnhakuilmoituksen: kokeneita merimiehiä etsitään rahtilaivaan, joka lähtisi kolmen viikon kuluttua kohti itää, Kaakkois-Aasiaan. "Rahtilaivan päämääränä on Indokiina, mutta se käy myös Indonesiassa ja Singaporella", lukee Orlando, äänessään innostusta. Miriam on huolissaan: entiset siirtomaat pyrkivät itsenäisyyteen, ja siellä on levottomuuksia – onko siellä turvallista? Orlando muistuttaa, kuinka tarpeen raha on nyt kun hän ei enää seilaa säännöllisesti Rotterdamin ja New Yorkin väliä. "Emmehän halua asua tässä pienessä vinttihuoneessa ikuisesti, rakas?", hän kysyy.

Orlando is reading the paper one morning and noticed that they are looking for experienced sailors for a ship that is sailing to Southeastern Asia in three weeks. "The ship's destination is Indochina but it will stop at ports also in Indonesia and Singapore," reads Orlando with clear excitement in his voice. Miriam is worried: former colonies are trying to get their independence and there are some fighting – will it be safe to go there? Orlando reminds his wife that the money is greatly needed now that he does not sail regularly from Rotterdam to New York anymore. "We do not want to live in this small room in the attic forever, right?", he says.

Vinttihuoneen lattia pitäisi kyllä saada paikalleen, nyt laudat makaavat irrallisina tuossa, ja osa lattiaa hohtaa valkoisena. Viikonloppuna en ehtinyt tehdä muuta kuin istuttaa agaven espresso-multaan ja kiinnittää Nukkekotikirppikseltä ostetun pikkuhyllyn sinitarralla seinään. Samasta paikasta ostetut ihanat tohvelit mahtuvat Miriamille juuri ja juuri – vähän pitäisi ehkä hioa jalkateriä sirommiksi, niin mahtuisivat vielä paremmin.

The floor in the attic is still loose. I really should glue and paint it. I didn't have time to work on Huis Orlando during the weekend, just planted the agave to it's espresso-ground and attached the little shelf with some kitchen stuff to the wall. The beautiful slippers I bought some time ago from FB's dollhouse flea market fit Miriam only barely – I think that I should sand her feet a bit so that they would fit better.

Oma koti kullan kallis / The home is where the heart is

Ensinnäkin, tervetuloa uusille lukijoilleni! Olen tosi iloinen, että teitä on jo noin monta. Ajattelinkin, että kun 40 lukijaa tulee täyteen, pidän pienet arpajaiset :)

First of all, welcome to my new readers! I'm so glad that there is so many of you already. I was thinking that I should have a lottery when the 40th reader has joined this blog :)

Huis Orlandossa on ahkeroitu. Miriam ja Orlando ovat raahanneet pienen maallisen omaisuutensa ylös vinttihuoneeseensa. Miriam, ikuinen esteetikko, halusi heti tuoda kotiin eläviä kukkia. (Huomasin muuten, että eiväthän nämä ole lähelläkään eläkeikää, ja Orlando huitelee vesillä vähän väliä. Pohjoisitalialaiset juuret hänellä onneksi kuitenkin on, etten ollut väärässä ihan kaikessa.)

They have been working hard in Huis Orlando.  Miriam and Orlando have carried their small belongings to the room in the attic they call their home. Miriam, always the aesthete, wanted to bring fresh flowers right away. (By the way, I realized that these two are nowhere near retirement age and Orlando is still very much an active sailor. His family is from northern Italy however, so I wasn't wrong there at least.)

Illan tullen kaikki on valmista, ja uunissakin palaa jo tuli. "Meillä ei ehkä ole paljon," Orlando sanoo, "vain patja lattialla ja pari voileipää, mutta meillä on toisemme ja samalla ihan kaikki." 

As the evening comes everything is ready and the fire has been started in the fireplace. "We may not have much," says Orlando, "just a mattress on the floor and couple of sandwiches, but we have each other and with that, we have everything."

Kulta, kotona ollaan! / Honey, I'm home!

Orlando näkyy saapuneen reissultaan. Miriam juoksi halaamaan rakastaan niin kovin, että onkohan hän mahtanut pelätä ollessaan yksin keskeneräisessä talossa..?

Orlando has arrived home. Miriam ran to hug him so hard that I wonder if she has been scared alone in the unfinished house..?

Malttia, malttia! / Hold your horses!

Malttamaton Miriam koittaa kovasti olla remontissa mukana. Orlando lienee jälleen jossain reissullaan, kun ei ole vieläkään talolle ilmaantunut. Seuraavaksi pitäisi käydä portaiden kimppuun ja asentaa muuri tulipesien taakse. Ylpeä emäntä nikkaroi jo rappusia ja suunnittelee vintin maalausta.

Hasty Miriam is trying to help me with the building. Orlando must be at the seas since we still have not seen a glimpse of him here at the house.  Next on my to-do-list are the stairs and the stonewall behind the fireplace. Miriam is already building the staircase downstairs and planning some painting to be done in the attic.

Mutta kenen puukengät ovat tänne kulmalle ilmestyneet..? But who's clogs are these here in the corner?

Hyvästi, kaljut päivät! / The bald days are over!

Enpä vain pystynyt menemään nukkumaan niin, että Miriam jäisi kaljuna pöydälle makaamaan. Onneksi löysin Casey's Minis -blogista hänen nukkejaan koskevia päivityksiä, joiden innoittamana lähdin asentamaan Miriamille hiuksia. Tummanruskea Rayher-merkkinen nukenhius oli löytynyt aiemmin Nukkekotikirppikseltä.

Halusin Miriamille hiukan sotkuisen lookin; hänhän on taiteilija, eikä ehdi jatkuvasti asetella hiuksiaan ojennukseen... Luulen, että Huis Orlandon elämä sijoittuu jonnekin 50-luvun paikkeille, joten kampaus saisi kuitenkin olla melko klassinen.

I just couldn't go to bed with Miriam lying bald on the table. Luckily I found some help and encouragement from Casey's Minis with her doll making entries. I had earlier bought Reyher-doll hair from the dollhouse market in FB. 

I wanted Miriam's hairdo to be somewhat messy as she is an artist and would not waste her time arranging her hair all day long... I think that I will have the Huis Orlando in the 1950's  so Miriam's hairdo should be classical.

Miriam (ilman tukkaa!) / Miriam (missing hair!)

Miriam alkaa olla valmis – vain hiukset puuttuvat. Vähän pitkä nainen tästä tuli, n. 15-senttinen (eli 1:1 hän olisi 180 cm). Ihan tyytyväinen en ole myöskään kasvojen maalaukseen, ja lakka on kummallisen kiiltävä, vaikka sen piti olla matta (Cernit Matt Transparent Vernish). Mutta koitan nyt ajaa (yli)kriittisen minäni kauas pois ja olla ylpeä elämäni ensimmäisestä, itse tehdystä nukesta.

Miriam is just about ready – she's just missing hair. She ended up being a bit too long with her 15 cm height (in 1:1 that would be 180 cm). I'm not totally satisfied with my painting on her face and the varnish is weirdly shiny although it was supposed to be matt (Cernit Matt Transparent Varnish). But I'm trying to banish my (over)critical self and be proud of my first ever self made doll.




Hmm, niin, puuttuvat häneltä vaatteetkin. Apua!

Hmm, oh yes, she's missing also clothes. Help!

Tapetointia / Wallpapering

Orlandon talo valmistuu mukavaa vauhtia, kiitos kovien pakkasten ja lauantain ihanan joutilaisuuden. Tänään on tapetoitu ahkerasti: yllätyksekseni löysinkin sopivat tapetit kaikkiin tiloihin ihan omasta varastosta, Tiimarin ale-laarista löytyneestä joulunajan skräppipaperilehtiöstä!

Orlando's house is coming together in good speed, thanks to the freezing weather outside and the total idleness of this Saturday. I've been wallpapering today and to my surprise I found all the wallpaper I needed from a scrapbook paper collection I had bought from sale after Christmas! On the ground floor there's going to be kitchen and the lobby + staircase. In the first floor living area and it the attic the bedroom.

Today I would like to get the dolls finished. I'm a bit worried about painting of the faces and putting on the hair, but I'm happy if I will get the body parts together now!

Huis Orlando

Vihdoin viimein minulla on omakin nukkekoti! Joulupukki teki oharit, joten tilasin joulun jälkeen itse itselleni talon Tiriinan lahjapuodista. Talo on pieni ja hyvin simppeli, mutta tästä on hyvä aloittaa – vähän mietin, että pitäiskö näitä tilata muutama lisää, että saisin aikaan rivitalon hollantilaiseen tyyliin.

Orlando (ent. Urho) on näet eläköitynyt merimies, italialaista syntyperää. Hän asuu vaimonsa Miriamin kanssa kanaalin varrella jossakin Amsterdamin liepeillä.

Talo on ihan alkutekijöissään, vasta testikasattu ja tapetointimerkinnät tehty. Keskikerroksen takaseinän sain jo tapetoitua, kun oli sopiva skräppipaperi valmiina. Orandon talo on siis kolmikerroksinen: alakerrassa eteinen ja tupa, keskikerroksessa oleskelutilat ja vintillä makuuhuone, ehkä toilettikin, jos mahtuu.

Talo on valkoista mdf-levyä, ja portaat oli valmiiksi valkoisiksi maalatut, ja alakerran lattia on tumma. Katto on tummaa paanumaista pintaa.

At last I have a dollhouse of my own! Santa didn't bring me anything so I bought one to my self. This is a really simple design made of white mdf-board. I've assembled it so that I can make all the markings for wallpapers correctly in place and then I will take it down again for renovation. I had scrapping paper perfect for the middle floor (which will house the living room) but the rest has to be bought. The ground floor will be kitchen and in the attic they will have their bedroom.

And just like that, Urho and Mirjami changed nationality! Now they are Dutch and named Miriam and Orlando, who is a former sailor with his roots deep in southern Italy. They live on the outskirts of Amsterdam by the canal.

I haven't even started this properly and already I'm dreaming of having at least three of these houses tightly next to each other as row houses are supposed to..!
